Issue #9  Winter 2016

Welcome to the Metrapanel Newspanel Winter Issue

Metrapanel has seen tremendous growth in the first half of 2016, this has been reflected in the industry as a whole. The national value of construction has experienced sustained growth averaging 7% per year since 2011, and is forecast to grow to a peak of $37 billion in 2017.   Referring to the BCI Pipeline Report for Q2 2016 for project within the concept and design stage, the year on year change Q2 2016 vs Q2 2015 show an increase of 24%, and a quarter on quarter change from Q1 2016 to Q2 2016 again shows an increase of 144.4%.  The busy residential market has been hitting the headlines but it is clear from the level of new proposals that develops clearly see plenty more scope for some time to come.

This in turn, represents a rate of growth not seen in over 40 years, and forecasts indicating a peak in 2017 that represents 20% ($6.2 billion) more value than at the end of 2015.  With the focus for most council unitary plans being to increase the number of medium to high density dwellings, the number of multi-unit dwellings consented each year in Auckland is forecast to continue to increase and is expected to overtake detached dwellings by 2021.

Metrapanel’s IT Wall system is one of the narrowest IT Wall systems on the market, being only 172mm wide. It boasts a STC61 sound rated, with no proprietary linings. It is fast becoming the ‘go-to’ product for these dwellings.  If you would like more technical information on this product, check out our EBOSS listing.

Metrapanel recently sponsored Huntly local Phobe Comins, to help her get to the 17th International Va’a Waka Ama Federation World Sprint Championships in Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast, Australia.   It was attended by the best of the best from 23 countries and 2200 paddlers battled it out on the water for world championship titles.  Phobe’s team ranked 9th for the 1000m and 10th for the 500m races.  Phobe said the experience has given her a real fire in her belly to push further and do better at the next World Sprint Championships in 2018 in Tahiti.

In the industry

The Metrapanel System is already here and has been for the last 25 years! Having provided and installed panel for over 9,000 homes nationwide, with a strong history boasting only positive experiences and a current network of 15 Licensed Installers and 127 Certified Builders, we have a factory capacity to take on extended growth throughout New Zealand, however we are still looking for some more key installers to hand these opportunity over to.  Please contact Melissa Savage if you have any queries or would like to discuss this opportunity in further detail.

RVA Annual Conference in conjunction with HPA

Over the course of the two day RVA conference, the Metrapanel/HPA stand was well frequented by attendees, most were interested in learning more about the Metrapanel system and what products are available. Several owners who were either extending or building new villages expressed interest in using Metrapanel after discovering the benefits of speed of construction, durability and reduced maintenance. Also exhibiting was PrefabNZ with their UNIpod on display - we are proud to be involved with this project and which also complimented our stand very well showing a cut through wall section of Metrapanel.

BuildNZ/DesignEX Christchurch 2016

Metrapanel in conjunction with two of our platinum installer Laing Properties and ICS, recently exhibited at the BuildNZ/DesignEX over three days in Christchurch at the beginning of August.  Overall we felt the event was very successful. The increase in brand recognition for all three exhibitors through the targeted market of specifiers and builders was definitely worthwhile.  We got to know and establish potential working relationship with some of our competitors and discover other complimentary products that can aid in producing an complete overall solution for the clients in many different markets. “There are a number of benefits right across the trades, you can wrap the place up quicker and it's water tight.  The pre primed product make painting a lot quicker, and that reduces the cost.  Time is money, to be competitive you need to look for the most innovative ways of doing things.  We have found the Metrapanel ceilings to be very successful with covering off all of those things.”

“All of our men quite like inspecting the houses with Metra ceilings.  They can get up on top of the roof and are totally safe.  You can jump up and down on them and it definitely doesn’t go anywhere.  You don’t have to worry about safety nets, where you put your feet, or what you’re going to hold onto.  You’ve got plenty of space to walk on.  I reckon it’s a great product.”

A product manufacturer and two of its dedicated trained installers will be teaming up at the BuildNZ/DesignEX trade event in Christchurch from August 4-6.  Both Laing Properties and Innocatice Ceiling Systems (ICS) have long sung the praises of Metrapanel...read more

More on Metrapanel...

What is Metrapanel made from?

  • Metrapanel is a product produced by LaminexNZ where the panel is made from compressed wood fibre derived from plantation pine, and heat compressed with an exclusively formulated resin. Our re-manufacturing plant then converts the raw board to preprimed Metrapanel after applying two coats of specially formulated Resene sealant. The panel is manufactured in accordance with the standard.

What is the structural performance of Metrapanel?

  • If designed, used, installed and maintained in accordance with the scope and limitations of the BRANZ Appraisal, the Metrapanel wall and ceiling panels, and connections will meet the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) Clause B1 Structure – Performance B1.3.1, B1.3.2 and B1.3.4. The Metrapanel System meets the requirements for loads arising from self-weight, imposed gravity loads, earthquake, snow and wind (i.e. B1.3.3(a), (b), (f), (g) and (h).
  • The ground floor construction platform must comprise of a concrete slab on ground constructed in accordance with NZS3604, or a suspended timber framed floor supported on a concrete wall or piled foundation, and the first floor load must not exceed 1.5kPa.
  • Roof pitches must be greater than 5 degrees but not exceed 30 degrees.

What height can you build up to with Metrapanel?

  • The Metrapanel system can be used for a 2.7m stud height and as per the Metrapanel Construction Manual a wall height of 3m can be accommodated.

How durable is Metrapanel?

  • Metrapanel is classed as a medium density product at 650kg/m3, making it robust and highly resistant to impacts associated with every day wear and tear, particularly for student accommodation, rental properties, retirement villages, warehouses, and hospitals.
  • Transportable houses prove the superior qualities of the Metrapanel system by remaining rigid during transportation and only requiring minor touch ups once delivered to site.
  • If designed, used, installed and maintained in accordance with the scope and limitiations of the BRANZ Appraisal, the Metrapanel wall and ceiling panels, and connections will meet the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) Clause B2 Durability – Performance B2.3.1 (a) 50 years.

How does Metrapanel stand up to moisture?

  • Metrapanel is moisture resistant and all cut or exposed edges are treated with a specially formulated paint to give it all round protection from water ingress. Metrapanel has been certified to cope with 28 days exposure before covering, but obviously the sooner it is protected the better.
  • As per the BRANZ Appraisal, Metrapanel can be used for wet areas such as ‘Water Splash’ and ‘Shower Areas’ but must be waterproofed. This can be achieved using proprietary rigid shower lining systems, flexible vinyl shower wall finish or tiling. Tiling shower areas must include a wet area waterproofing membrane system under the tiles. The incorporation of vented windows and other forms of permanent ventilation are recommended in all rooms to ensure adequate air circulation and to prevent the build-up of moisture levels. Walls and ceilings in wet areas that are outside the ‘Water Splash’ and ‘Shower Areas’ may be finished with a protective paint system.
  • The use of Metrapanel wall and ceiling panels has not been assessed for rooms exposed to sustained high humidity’s (greater than 85% RH) such as a sauna, or areas where the temperatures are in excess of 35 degrees for prolonged periods such as ceiling heating installations, or in excess of 50 degrees in localised areas (e.g. adjacent to a fuel burning appliance)

What do I do if I get a water leak?

  • As a general guideline, repair the water leak, allow the panel to dry thoroughly and shrink back to size, and finish as per Metrapanel finishing guide. For major damage you may need to cut out the area and replace it with a new piece of panel, plaster and repaint.

What is the ‘R’ rating on a Metrapanel home?

  • By combining conventionally fitted joinery and exterior cladding (as per timber framed buildings) with Metrapanel, a thermal insulation rating of up to R6.0 can be achieved.

Does Metrapanel release toxins?

  • As per the BRANZ Appraisal 364, ‘Metrapanel wall, floor and ceiling panels will not present a health hazard to people’. Results of a formaldehyde monitoring investigation have been obtained and show that the air concentration of formaldehyde in a number of finished houses is acceptable being below the WHO guideline for ‘no concern’, which is 0.05ppm.
  • If designed, used, installed and maintained in accordance with the statements and conditions of the BRANZ Appraisal, the Metrapanel wall and ceiling panels, and connections will meet the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) Clause F2 Hazardous Building Materials – Performance F2.3.1.

What cost advantages are there with using Metrapanel?

  • The Metrapanel product cost is comparative to traditional timber framing system. However, as a result of the 40-60% faster construction, considerable savings are made on labour and finance costs, and your quote isn’t padded to allow for bad weather days.
  • Due to the large 7.35x2.45 sheet size, less stopping and painting is required, and the durability benefits result in significant maintenance cost savings.

What is the width, length, thickness, weight of the panels?

  • 36mm wall panels 7350x2450, weighs 416kg
  • 25mm ceiling panels 7350x2450, weighs 288kg
  • 25mm flooring panels 7350x2450, weighs 288kg
  • 18mm wall panels 7350x2450, weighs 214kg

What is the largest size home that can be transported?

  • 8.5 metres wide by 23 metres long - 190sqm

Can Metrapanel ceilings be used as a ceiling diaphragm?

  • Providing the ceiling panels meet the requirements as set out in section 5.3 of the Metrapanel Design and Construction Manual, Metrapanel ceilings may be used as a ceiling diaphragm.

How do the sound ratings of Metrapanel compare to traditional construction?

  • Metrapanel walls can provide an STC rating from 28 to 61 depending on the composition of the wall (statement from Auckland University 2006).
  • For noisy areas such as music rooms, home theatres and media centres, Metrapanel has a system that can achieve a STC50 rating.
  • For Inter-tenancy walls between separate household units, Metrapanel has a system that can achieve a desired STC61 rating. The inter-tenancy walls are constructed to provide structural support and both fire and sound insulation between habitable spaces from one dwelling to another. This Inter-tenancy Wall Design and Construction also boasts a FRR 30/30/30 fire resistance rating.

What is the maximum snow loading for Metrapanel?

  • Snow loading shall not exceed 1.5kPa without a specific engineered design.

What is the maximum wind zone for Metrapanel?

  • Metrapanel buildings are limited to all Wind Zones up to and including Very High without specific engineered design.

Why METRA?

Design flexibility
The smooth easily achieved Level 5 finish of Metrapanel requires minimal special preparation other than normal sanding. You can paint or paper directly onto it, and place fittings or hang pictures virtually anywhere with Metrapanel because surfaces are solid from edge to edge. Metrapanel is compatible with all usual cladding systems, masonry, timber, brick or exterior panels.

Reduced build time
A home built with Metrapanel goes up quickly and efficiently. An average sized project usually takes just one day to position and secure. Once the floor slab is down, houses built with Metrapanel are completed 40-60% faster than traditional construction methods. Weather is never a problem for Licensed Metrapanel Installers as Metrapanel is pre-primed to ensure it stays weather resistant for up to 28 days. Therefore, no time is wasted waiting for things to dry.

Cost savings
A Metrapanel building takes less time to complete and therefore costs less - labour charges are lower, the stopping cost is minimal, finance costs are reduced, and your quote isn’t padded to allow for bad weather days.

Impact Resistance
The perfection of Metrapanel is almost impossible to dent. At 650kg/m3, the density of a Metrapanel wall is significantly higher than that of solid timber. This means it can really take the bumps and bangs of everyday life, particularly in the social housing, retirement and education sectors. Therefore, the maintenance savings over time is significant.

Environmentally conscious
The Metrapanel system uses a construction panel made from engineered wood fibres and flakes – using waste product from existing manufacturing of timber means we don’t need to cut down any new trees to produce Metrapanel. Also, the speed of construction helps lessen the impact on the surroundings.

Issue #8: Autumn 2016

Welcome to the Autumn Issue of the Metrapanel Newspanel.

Although the Metrapanel team were faced with a terrible accident in January, which has devastated us all, we are now able to start looking forward to the year ahead.
The opportunities for prefabrication in the construction industry are exponential, with NZ consents at a record high since 2005 comprising 2,379 new dwellings in February 2016, and the retirement and social housing sectors forecasting a shortfall of 75,000 homes, as well, the new city focus being on multi-unit development, and non-residential activity also at its highest. Along with new classrooms required to accommodate the predicted 107,000 extra students by 2030.

Construction in NZ is boosting the GDP and interest rates are decreasing. Therefore, the need to diversify to combat record high house prices and housing for the surging migrant flows is significant - Metrapanel is the answer!

Highlights from the last quarter were:

  • New BRANZ appraisal obtained
  • Metrapanel is now LIVE on the EBOSS Library
  • Being a component in the winning Unipod entry
  • ISC website goes live
  • Launch of 3 new plans to keep up with the changing demands of modern family living

New Zealand Commercial Design Trends Series NZ Vol 31/11

The Whakatane Beacon, 26 January 2016

Metrapanel, a component in winning Unipod entry
An innovative design by Wellington’s First Light Studio has emerged as the winner of the PrefabNZ UniPod design competition. The UniPod is an open-source universally accessible bathroom pod that is designed specifically for multi-unit residential applications, think social housing, retirement villages, and apartment buildings. Metrapanel is specified as both the 36mm ceiling panel and the 36mm double skinned service cavity walls

"As a young company dedicated to producing future-thinking architecture that enhances the wellbeing of people and the environment, we are thrilled to win PrefabNZ’s UniPod competition. Accessible bathroom design too often brings to mind sterile materials, cold grab-rails and clunky fixtures, so we’ve enjoyed the opportunity to show that a universal bathroom pod can be beautiful as well as functional, durable and economical. We focused on creating a bathroom that not only allowed for easy, comfortable use and movement but which would be a truly enjoyable space to be in." says Anna Farrow of First Light Studio

Metrapanel is now LIVE on the EBOSS library
EBOSS is an online library of product catalogues from 225 of New Zealand’s leading architectural product suppliers.  It is the most widely used architectural product database in New Zealand. Launching in 2007, architects and architectural designers quickly adopted it as the Internet resource for architectural product literature and drawings. In recent years EBOSS has seen significant growth in registrations from the large New Zealand trade audience.  Metrapanels’ decision to become a part of the library was a simple one – to get in front of as many specifiers as possible and arm them with the technical information and knowledge to go back to their clients with confidence in the product they are recommending.

Beacon Housing Matters with PrefabNZ Prebuilt Site Tour
Housing Matters is a series of workshops and site visits to bring investors, designers, developers, builders, researchers, regulators and planners together to share information, explore case studies, develop opportunities for collaboration, and focus on solutions for quality housing development in Canterbury.

These units highlight the advantages of the Metrapanel IT wall system, STC rating of 61, 30min two way fire wall.  The HNZ apartment block viewed has a multi-use consent.  Laing Properties carried out the project management and build of this project.  The Metrapanel System is BRANZ Appraised for up to 2-storeys based on the scope of the Design and Construction Manual.  If your requirements are outside of this they will need to be engineered based on the site specifications.

IN THE OFFICE

Metrapanel has a strong focus on establishing and developing solid working relationships with Strategic Partners and this last quarter has become an associate member of…

RVA
The Retirement sector is a growth area that Metrapanel is focused on. Having built six retirement villages and four hospitals over time, Metrapanel have been able to perfect the offering, alongside Installers and Developers to achieve strong case studies and testimonials. Now an associate member of the RVA ‘Retirement Villages Association’, Metrapanel is involved in opportunities directly with retirement village owners and have been able to educate through speaking engagements.  The Retirement Villages Association’s strength and position in New Zealand comes from its combined village membership which accounts for more than 95% of all registered villages in New Zealand.

With a total industry investment approaching $106bn (and growing daily), the RVA is the industry’s authoritative voice in New Zealand, looking after members and the well-being of more than 32,000 retirement village residents The Retirement Villages Association has forecast that operators will need to build 800-1,200 dwellings annually to meet rising demand as New Zealanders age, based on an average village of 150 dwellings, this would mean a further 30,000 homes would be needed by 2030.

80 retirement villas constructed with Metrapanel
“We have experienced no problems or damage with villa’s constructed of this material, which has resulted in tens of thousands of dollars saved in unnecessary repair costs when refurbishing villas. We would highly recommend this product to any future purchasers”. Henry Van Dyk, Trust Board Chairman, Rangiura Retirement Village and Home for the Elderly

100 homes and a private hospital constructed with Metrapanel
“The walls have an excellent smooth internal finish and because the walls are 36mm thick it is very difficult to sustain damage and therefore the repair and maintenance of everyday use is minimal. Our residents often comment on how warm the houses are in the winter and cool in the summer”. Claire Neshat, Manager, Althorp Village

IN THE FIELD

From Retirement Villages and student accommodation, to the first home buyer and architecturally designed homes, Metrapanel can be used to provide a durable structure built 30-50% faster than traditional methods.
A variety of projects captured over the last quarter are:

The clients were a young family, who wanted a future-proof, smart, functional, modern and energy efficient home. This 122sqm home was originally based off of a standard plan but altered and redesigned by Forever Architecture and constructed by Fusion Homes.  The strength, speed of construction, premium finish and the size of the panels, which meant no plaster joins in their bedrooms, were the main influences in their decision to build using the Metrapanel System.

Perched high on a steep site in the Port Hills of Christchurch, this unique home is supported by a strong timber pole foundation and steel subfloor.  The site itself proved challenging, with the construction of robust retaining walls and City Council and Engineering requirements for hill builds in Christchurch.  When first entering the home you notice the spaciousness, with the raking ceiling in the main living area and also featuring high windows for additional light.  Both the master bedroom and bedroom two have French doors that open out onto a deck, highlighting a fantastic view across the city.  With a bathroom for the children and an ensuite off the master bedroom for the adults, this home is compact, however utilizing the Metrapanel System provides extra floor space throughout.

In January, Metrapanel sent another four villas down to McKenzie Village in Geraldine. Metrapanel has been proudly associate with the McKenzie Village for the past five years, Maxim Construction is the local Metrapanel Installer in Geraldine having completed 45 units in this village to date.

Over the past two years we have completed 158x2 storey apartment units for HNZ in the Christchurch region alone.  The final five units were delivered in February.  These units highlight the advantages of the Metrapanel IT wall system, STC rating of 61, and 30min two way fire wall.

Issue #7: Summer 2015

Starting to wind down and getting into the Summer spirit, we have enjoyed celebrating a great year with our team this month. Without a top team in the office and in the factory we wouldn’t have been able to meet the demand the industry has been experiencing this year. The growth in 2015 has been significant and with the ongoing exposure, Metrapanel is becoming more and more known. “Production has increased by 60% since 2007, as a result of keeping up with demand. Metrapanel are excited about the future of prefabrication and the advantages it offers developers, builders and most importantly home owners.

It was comforting when we were recently audited by Global Mark and WorkSafe NZ, both indicated that for a medium size company we have solid processes and procedures.  These have been developed over time with support in 2015 from the Lean Group and The Building Business.

Our Installer network has grown by two more Installers Lifecare Homes and Custom Construction, and we look forward to helping these companies grow to their full potential.

Highlights from the last quarter were:

  • 60% growth in sales since 2007 with October, November and December having been record months
  • ICS secure safe ceilings through Placemakers Ashburton, Riccarton, Mitre10 Hornby, Williams Homes and Trident Homes
  • New installer enquiry has been huge, particularly in Auckland and Waikato.  If you are interested in finding out more, visit the COME ON BOARD section of the website.
  • Getting out and about and spreading the word at PrefabNZ Hamilton Cluster Meeting, PrefabNZ RVA Design and Construction Forum, NZGBC AGM Catch up and Member Drinks, Northland Home and Leisure Show and the Waikato Home Show
  • True Vision Construction website goes live
  • Tradeline Builders and Marine wins best stand for the Northland Home and Leisure Show

Strategic Partner – PrefabNZ
A question we have come across in the past few months is WHAT IS PREFAB? Some people think that it is purely transportable buildings but this is not the case - Prefab is a way to create innovative high-quality buildings on time and within budget. Prefab refers to any part of a building that is made away from the final building site, which is why it can also be referred to as offsite construction or manufacture (OSM)

Prebuilt construction is first and foremost a higher quality solution as parts are built in a controlled environment, not on an exposed construction site. Secondly it is an efficient and quickly assembled solution that saves time and thirdly it is a cost-effective solution as 'saving time is the fastest way to save money'

Metrapanel are very proud of our partnership with PrefabNZ, we have been a founding member of PrefabNZ since its inception in 2008. PrefabNZ was established to meet the clear need for a prefabrication industry hub to connect, catalyse, inform, inspire and promote prefabricated building solutions.

By joining PrefabNZ you will be in touch with the prefab industry in NZ. You will benefit from an increased awareness of current research and development initiatives, events and possible collaborations and joint ventures with like-minded, compatible businesses.

Laminex NZ recognised at NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
Laminex New Zealand has won the EECA Business Energy Management Award for its Taupo site at the NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards held at Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront on 24 November  The NZI Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Awards are New Zealand’s longest-standing and pre-eminent sustainability awards. The awards are now in their 13th year and are designed to recognise businesses that are making a real difference by innovating New Zealand’s business landscape

The judges said that, “Laminex New Zealand has made energy management and sustainability a priority from the top down using frameworks such as their very own GREENfirst® strategy alongside Environmental Choice New Zealand, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and FSC. Laminex New Zealand reports energy and carbon dioxide emission performance to staff, driving staff engagement and yielding great projects. These include upgrading lighting and converting 1400 tonnes per annum of sander dust into biofuel and in the process reducing waste to landfill by 74 percent.”

“To be acknowledged amongst such a high calibre of sustainability protagonists is right up there for any business – regardless of their marketplace, so to come away with an award is something very special” says Rebbecca Page, Sustainability Advisor for Laminex New Zealand.

Strategic Partner – Resene
Resene has been partnered with Metrapanel for the last 15 years and next year Resene will be celebrating their 70th year as they started in 1946. Resene is a 3rd generation family NZ owned private business which gives us the advantage of following our long term visions as opposed to corporations that focus on returning profits to shareholders.  Resene’s Vision:  “To be respected as an ethical and sustainable company and acknowledged as the leading provider of innovative paint and colour technology, and we are keeping to this vision. It is the keystone of our business both in the past and moving into the 22nd Century.  Resene has a long history of developing quality coatings and colours to meet customer needs. Resene Coating Technologies takes that to the next level, bringing together a focused professional team and a wealth of paint and coatings knowledge, backed by the extensive resources of the Resene Technical and Research & Development team. This is the team that worked closely with Metrapanel on the priming system and the fire rating system for Metrapanel. – John Kilby, Business Development, Resene.

IN THE FIELD

From Retirement Villages and student accommodation, to the first home buyer and architecturally designed homes, Metrapanel can be used to provide a durable structure built 30-50% faster than traditional methods.
A variety of projects captured over the last quarter are:

True Vision Show Home

Steve and his team at True Vision Construction have completed this awesome 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home in Renwick, Blenheim.  They have been really creative with the use of off cuts from this home by creating a built-in study nook and shelving units.

Tobeck Builders

After installing Metrapanel for many clients and viewing its benefits, Danny from Tobeck Builders has now built his own architectural designed 2 story, 5 bedroom, 226sqm executive family home using Metrapanel as the chosen construction system.

The Mancave

Hamilton Installer Kbuilt has built every man’s dream.  A home where the shed is bigger than the house - 186sqm shed and 164sqm house, it is a home that meets all their needs.  When Kbuilt met Jenny and Steve Warner they had plans for a pretty architectural shed/house all under one roof, they had received quotes but it was going to be too expensive. Paul could see that Penny wanted good proportions in their new home, especially the living areas, and Steve really wanted a big shed for his hobbies.  So with Kbuilt steel shed systems shed and the Metrapanel silver fern plan, they were able to mix the two for a perfect outcome.

De Bretts Cabins

Lyall and his team from Xtreme Builders is currently working on a project with DeBretts Spa Resort.  Xtreme are currently building 13x45msq self-contained units that will be completed with  underfloor heating, air conditioning and double glazing.  Debretts chose to use Metrapanel as they feel it is very durable and easy to look after.  Click here to see more about DeBretts and the cabins

Broadbent Street - Hybrid Building

Collaboration, whether it be between our Installers or Metrapanel and other materials on the build, the opportunities are endless - Broadbent Street showcases both.  The original brief to Maxim Homes Ashburton received from HNZC was to provide durable, healthy and sustainable housing at a realistic build cost. With that in mind, the use of Metrapanel was the immediate choice for the walls and ceilings due to its strength, speed of build and very low maintenance costs. One of the largest ongoing costs for HNZC is repairs due to damage to wall linings etc. from tenants. Metrapanel addresses this problem perfectly.  The choice of concrete tilt panel IT Walls is a first for HNZC.  With all 5 x walls being erected in one day, and there are no issues with fire and noise regulations and compliments the Metrapanel speed of construction.  Along with a collaboration with Laing Properties, who have helped to push this project along immensely, the trusses have been installed and they aim to have the project wrapped and sealed before the Christmas break.  Great work Maxim Homes Ashburton and Laing Properties.

Safety First

Utilising Metrapanels inertia reels and harnesses, Innovative Ceiling Systems completed this large 300m2 ceiling in one day, with time to spare!  The reels allow flexibility to work whilst maintaining safety of the staff which is the number one priority.  ICS have had a number of finalist placings in the Site Safe Construction Health and Safety Awards for their systematic approach to Health and Safety with the use of these props.  Contact ICS to find out more

METRAkids give back

The METRAkids had their family Christmas party on 17 December – this year was a “Movie by the Lake” night with fun rides, yummy food and a movie on a huge screen under the stars but it was also about giving back to the less fortunate in our community.  Patrick Roberts is an honorary METRAkid, he is currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy in Waikato Hospital for acute rhabdomyo sarcoma.  This rare and aggressive form of cancer effects the soft tissue and in Patricks case was discovered in his groin, there are currently 4 cases diagnosed in 1 million children per year.

The METRAkids brought their pocket money 10, 20, and 50 cent coins to pay for their food, rides and movie night.  This group of amazing kids gave over $300 of their pocket money toward Patrick and his family.  The local Huntly business community also matched their donations so a big thank you goes out to Metrapanel System, Builtsmart and Huntly Joinery for their contribution as well.  Altogether we raised close to $1500 to give to Patrick and his family to enable them to have a brighter, less stressful Christmas together.

Stained Flooring

Duncan from Maxim Homes Ashburton is renowned for thinking outside the box.  This example is no exception to that rule.  The client came to Duncan wanting a small farm cottage for their worker.  He sold them the concept of True Vision Construction's METRAbatch.  The clients were looking for an easy care flooring option.

Duncan came up with the option of staining the Metrapanel flooring panel that was left raw from the factory.  The stain was buffed in and the first coat of varnish went on in their factory prior to it going to site, once onsite the build continued.  A final sand and coat of high gloss floor varnish was put on once everything was completed. The great thing about this kind of flooring, is that if it get damaged you can just sand it back and re-varnish it to look like brand new.

New Installer Training
We held our North Island Installer training on 4 November.  This was a great way for our new installers and builders to learn the art of installing Metrapanel.  We had 9 participants attending from as far away as New Plymouth to Auckland.

Installer Focus Group
We appreciate the support that was offered from the installers that attended our 2015 Installer Focus Group.  We had a small but vocal group that were very open and honest about what was and wasn’t working with the Metrapanel System. Thanks for the time and effort from the Installers, some of who traveled from Nelson, Christchurch and Ashburton to participating in the event.  Their input has been very valuable in contributing to the overall Business, R&D and Marketing Plans for 2016.

Have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year break. We are closing down for the Christmas break on the 23rd of December 2015 at 12.00 noon and will reopen on the 11th of January 2016.  See you all in the New Year…

Issue #6: Spring 2015

Welcome to the Spring Issue of the Metrapanel Newspanel

Spring is a time for the new growth to push through the hard ground and flourish. Resilience is a big topic in the industry at the moment, whether it be through shoddy workmanship as demonstrated in this article, regarding the rise in failing building inspections in Auckland  Or resilience of the product to the increased frequency of climate change related extreme weather events such as the flooding, storms and even tropical cyclones. The June/July Build Magazine has a fantastic feature section on this topic.

Metrapanel has been put to the test recently with five houses that were built in Port Vila, Vanuatu by Thermawise. On March 6th 2015 tropical cyclone Pam ripped through this area of the pacific.  Winds officially reached speeds of up to 270km per hour. Unofficially there were reports of a tug boat in Port Vila Harbour that had its anemometer fail at 440km per hour.  Our BRANZ appraisal has Metrapanel rated up to a very high wind zone, this is the equivalent to 180km per hour. So it offically withstood one and half times its rated wind speed, and unofficially two and a half times its rated wind speed.  Grants customer spent a week preparing their five properties before leaving them whilst the cyclone passed through. Two of their tenants moved to other houses where the roofs had been ripped off, but when they came back to their own homes the next day, they found their own five houses perfect, with no structural damage whatsoever.  Many people had been coming up to the property owner to enquire if their houses survived as there was a lot of skepticism when they were building. Congratulations to Grant and his team at Thermawise.

We feel that producing a modular panel system for 25 years is something to celebrate.  The industry is volatile with turnover of companies in a short time frame and we feel one of our main advantage is standing the test of time and having a proven track record.  We are proud of the history of the panel system spanning 25 year and have developed a video encompassing the journey for you to view.

Highlights from the last quarter were:

- 6 week turnkey solution perfected for an average 160-180sqm home and proving popular for developments
- New installer enquiry has been huge, particularly in Auckland and Waikato.  If you are interested in finding out more, visit the COME ON BOARD section of the website.

In the Office

Metrapanel has a strong focus on establishing and developing solid working relationships with Strategic Partners, this last quarter we have been heavily involved with…

Homes designed for a lifetime.
Metrapanel’s partnership with Lifemark™ was established in 2013 and since then it has gone from strength to strength.  During this time Metrapanel has developed our own Envirolife Plans which are both Lifemark™ and Homestar Certified, and Lifemark™ has been involved with Metrapanel Team Events and have been very cooperative in spreading the word about Metrapanel.  Lifemark™ is an independent seal of approval awarded to homes that have been designed and built to achieve specific quality design standards which make them easy and safe to live in – for a lifetime. Supported by the New Zealand Government, Lifemark™ advocate design standards to improve the state of NZ housing, providing design solutions for one of the nation’s most pressing needs – our ageing population. The Lifemark™ is their seal of approval is a set of common sense design standards to deliver quality, reassurance and trust based on 5 key principles; Accessibility, Adaptability, Usability, Safety and Lifetime Value.

Lifemark™ has also just released their Welcome Partner 2015 documents, including all design materials, partner logos, brand guide and now the new Certification Process which has a mini checklist for assessments. Lifemark™ has had great exposure over the last 8 months with the take-off of their Consumer Campaign. Their series of ads ran alongside TV3’s on-demand service and featured in prime-time spot, Grand Designs. The campaign saw a 35% increase in traffic to the Lifemark™ website.

Element Magazine in the NZ Herald has been the most recent exposure which included a feature on how to ‘Future-proof your home’ with the article focusing on how with a bit of forethought, planning and function, a home that has been Lifemark™  Rated can age with you. Metrapanel teamed up alongside Lifemark™ for the feature article as one of the highlighted partners.

Six week turn-around key for the current market
A strong prefabrication sector will deliver genuine benefits for the whole New Zealand construction industry, encouraging innovation and improved efficiency through this streamlined building process, improving quality and affordability. 25 year panel system manufacturer Metrapanel, has proved this statement with three of our Platinum Installers perfecting a 6 week turnkey solution for an average 160-180sqm house with a team of three, and no compromise on quality. Further efficiencies can be made in a factory built environment such as PLB/BuiltSmart’s long standing establishment producing 45-153sqm transportable houses in only 4-6 weeks.

Laminex Taupo thinking outside the box for waste disposal
The Laminex Taupo plant produces particle board from wood waste. Once manufactured, the board is given a sand to final thickness which produces a fine dust similar in consistence to flour.  Some of this dust is used as a fuel in the sites furnace, however; during the warmer months and at times of high production, an excess is produced which for 40 years has been dumped in a local landfill. The private local landfill that had been accepting this waste was due to close in March 2014, the local council landfill didn’t accept this product so Laminex was on the hunt for a viable alternative.  After looking into possible alternatives, bricquettes were agreed to be the most effective.  When compacted, the bricquettes become 2.5 times the density of the raw dust.  A machine was brought in from China and brought up to New Zealand standards along with a few design alterations was ready to go.  Around 1,350 tons of sanderdust per year is now converted from a waste product to a useable biomass fuel source. This was 70% of all Laminex NZ’s entire waste to landfill. The briquettes have undergone thorough laboratory testing for emission levels from burning.  We love Laminex’s commitment to sustainability and commend them on always thinking outside the box.

After installing Metrapanel for many clients and completely understanding the full benefits of the panel system, Danny from Tobeck Builders has now built his own architectural designed 2 story, 5 bedroom, 226sqm executive family home using Metrapanel as the chosen construction system.

True Vision Construction has developed this 51sqm 1 bedroom/1 bathroom METRABatch also perfect for a farm cottage or granny flat.  It is made up of two separate units 7m long by 3.6m wide which can be easily split apart and moved to another site if the owner wishes. It also has a large open plan user friendly kitchen and spacious lounge.

St Marys Pro Cathedral
A unique project now underway with Fusion Homes and Opus Consulting which will provide a new choir room and office facility for the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Choir and Music team.  The choir and music team were displaced from its original rooms at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament due to the February 2011 earthquakes.  This new building will provide a state-of-the-art facility for both local and visiting artists. The build is in the early stages at the moment but check out the St Marys Pro Cathedral profile on the project page of our website, to see it all come together.

Hopetoun Alpha Residence
Eru Cameron from On2It Builders did a great job completing 40 apartment storage lockers for Summit Construction.  A great use of Metrapanel in a small confined space.  Giving the lockers a larger storage area compared to traditional building methods, with the addition security and durability that Metrapanel has to offer.

"Andrew, we really appreciate the way you, Eru and your team produced a quality locker system, you and your team were a pleasure to work with from the start to completion.  The lockers were installed efficiently and the result is an extremely high standard of finish which has resulted in a top quality locker system. We definitely look forward to working with you and your team on upcoming projects."  Allan Roigard, Site Manager - Summit Construction

During the last quarter another 22 Housing NZ units, where erected using the Metrapanel System throughout various locations in Christchurch, Feedback from Housing NZ is that they are very pleased with the projects, as they are on time, and under budget.

The staff and children of Bishopdale Preschool were displaced after their original building was destroyed in the February 2011 earthquake.  Fusion Homes are completing this build with a focus on energy efficiency and sensitive choice.  Looking out for the little tenants of the building and needing the best options for this environment.

Habourside Development
Panelwood Homes is proving that thinking outside the box is a good idea.  Purchasing 6 sections in the seaside location of Mangawhai, and developing a plan that will see two transportable units constructed and then transported together to site, saving $5000 in transportation costs.  All that needs to be done on site is connect the services and build the breezeway connecting the two units.  This fantastically simple and beautiful design is perfect for its seaside location.

 Eastside Heights
A fantastic new subdivision here in Huntly.  PLB/Builtsmart have undertaken this affordable development with their ‘house and land packages’ starting from $314K.  If you look at a comparison to a similar property we found in Papakura, Auckland a new build ‘house and land package’, four bedroom with two bathroom and a similar sized section is $765K.  You can’t really go past Eastside heights for value for money. On 2 It Family Trust
The trust was founded in January 2015 by Andrew and Melissa Savage with the vision of supporting the Metra Family/Team in any way we can, to keep our families healthy and safe. The first project for the year was Brad and Anneka’s house.  We were replacing and painting rotten weatherboards, installing a new heat pump, carpeting a bedroom and painting the back porch.  Anneka say “We are so warm and cosy now with our new heat pump and the carpet is fantastic to walk on.  We want to say a huge thank you to Andrew, Melissa and the On2It Family Trust for helping us to achieve a beautiful warm home for our family.” Check out baby Amelia enjoying the new carpet

The Olympic Dream

We are looking forward to our upcoming Installer Focus Group in October where we have the opportunity to involve our installers in the decision making process of our Business Plan for 2016.  This is going to be a great insightful day!

Exciting plans are underway for our next Team Event Conference to be held in February 2016.  We love getting together with our wider national family to celebrate, engage, network, share and have fun over a couple of days.  We look forward to sharing more information with you next year.

Metrapanel System celebrates 25 years
Metrapanel had a fantastic event with an intimate group of key partners and local dignitaries on the 8th July.  We were privileged to have the support of our local mayor Alan Sanson and National Party MP Lindsay Tisch.  It is heart-warming to have such support not only from within our own family but also the Metrapanel family as a whole. We would like to extend our thanks to all of our installers and their teams, suppliers and partners, without you and your support and belief in the product, Metrapanel would not be where it is today. We are excited to see where Metrapanel will be in the next 25 years

Metrapanel System has an active social club.  Our latest outing was to Daytona Indoor Raceway in Hamilton.  We spilt into teams and raced each other for 90 laps.  Everyone’s competitive streaks came out and as the race progressed, drifting, cutting off, spinning out and the odd squeal were common. We then went across the road to the Te Rapa Tavern for a few quiets and some rather larger platters.

Next update in December 2015 - Summer issue!

Until then, have a great few months and feel free to give Melissa Savage, Business Manager a call direct on 07 828 2077 or email, to discuss any projects or opportunities you would like to investigate with Metrapanel.
