Metrapanel - 25 years’ proven, 100% NZ made, owned and operated family growth business, offering more house and stronger house for your money. Metrapanel has a nationwide network of Licensed Installers and Certified Builders experienced in delivering innovative projects of all sizes. With long standing Licensed Installers PLB/Builtsmart, Laing Properties, Maxim Construction and Windermere Developments, we have been providing quality buildings throughout the North and South Island for a quarter of a century!
2015 has seen Metrapanel set a new record in growth since 1994, “Fletcher Building's highest production unit record was set in 2002. This has always been a challenging target for Metrapanel, our 2014/2015 end of year result surpassed this record. Most interestingly our team achieved this with 12 less staff and one less truck on the road. Great team effort” said Melissa Savage, Metrapanel Business Manager. We are investing in lean manufacturing to streamline processes, remove waste and strengthen team commitment. It is important to us to ensure we are running a business with maximum efficiencies which then filter through to our Installers and onwards to the end customer – providing the ultimate full experience. Our customers, installers and results are testament to this philosophy, even during volatile times Metrapanel has maintained steady growth.
Coming into the colder months the benefits of using the Metrapanel System start to become very visible - the speed of a Metrapanel build is 30-50% faster and there are no delays due to bad weather. With the Metrapanel System you get your walls and ceilings on week two, day one of your build so less down time is required, instead of waiting for the traditional frame work to dry.
Highlights from the last quarter were:
- Completing Althorp Private Hospital and Lifecare units in Pyes Pa, Tauranga – 138 homes plus a hospital fully constructed with Metrapanel. Listen to Claire Neshart talk about working with Metrapanel.
- Continuing to work closely with Richard Pollington, General Manager, Laminex NZ. Listen to his views
- Completing over 100 homes for Housing NZ on time and to budget, and securing the next phase.
- ICS secure safe ceilings through GJ Gardiner Mid and South Canterbury, and Concision.
- Hosting a training work shop with record turnout, and reaching 115 Certified Builders nationwide.
- Launching our ‘Metrapanel Working from Heights ToolKit’ to Installers to comply with WorksafeNZ.
- Launching a ‘Come on Board’ package for builders interested in utilising the system.

Metrapanel has a strong focus on establishing and developing solid working relationships with Strategic Partners and this last quarter has been heavily involved with…
Education and advocacy:
We’ve just become a member of BOINZ and look forward to working towards a common goal of educating their members on the use of prefabrication and where Metrapanel fits. The Institute represents over 1,200 members engaged in building controls in both the public and private sectors. Their vision is to improve the quality and performance of the built environment. The Institute encourages members to develop a better understanding of the responsibilities and duties imposed by Acts and regulations. The Institute will review, promote, or lobby for legislation and standards which will provide safe and healthy buildings for our community
Health and Safety plays an integral role:
Working with Safewise, Health and Safety continues to be a crucial part in the role Metrapanel holds in the industry. With 113 Certified Installers having completed their Health and Safety Training Certificate and a record training event held in April, it is at the forefront of our business focus to ensure the safety of every party involved with Metrapanel and is of utmost importance. Everyone must be trained and certified - from our staff and Installers, to the hi ab drivers.
Having just launched our ‘Metrapanel Working from Heights ToolKit’ to Installers in April, we know our network is armed with all the documentation to assist WorkSafeNZ should they visit one of our work sites to inspect paperwork and tools/equipment. Non-compliance can result in a stop work notice and prosecution!
Held in Christchurch in April, it was our largest turnout for a Training workshop with 30 attendees in total - 20 attended the full training, six attended the driver training, and four attended the HNZ project training. This proves real commitment in keeping teams safe, and supporting Metrapanel with the health and safety / onsite installer training programme.
Our next training event will be held in Huntly on the 13th of August 2015 – if you would like to upskill and become a Certified Builder, check out how to Come on Board.
A positive perception of prefabrication
Liaising with PrefabNZ, we continue to align our marketing calendars and goals with the aim to grow the positive perception prefabrication in NZ significantly. Our very own Sheena Young, Marketing Manger at Metrapanel System has been nominated to stand for the board for PrefabNZ. Please support Sheena in her bid to obtain a seat by voting for her. The voting closes on Monday 22nd of June 2015. This will ensure that Sheena, on behalf of Metrapanel and our installers is at the forefront of the industry. It will also give us, through Sheena the ability to contribute and support in the decision making process with PrefabNZ. Click here to vote learn more about Sheena and to cast your vote.
Working with The Lean Group We are living and breathing SOP’s, lean manufacturing and training! Implementing lean thinking isn’t as easy as reading about it in a book. Research indicates that as much as 80% of the success of a lean implementation relies on how the training was conducted and how management create strong processes to ensure enduring lean success. Laminex has worms!
Focused on sustainability ourselves, we found it very interesting learning from the best. The Laminex manufacturing plant, based in Taupo has a new way of dealing with industrial amounts of organic waste – an industrial sized worm farm. The worm farm is producing around 300,000kgs of high quality Vermicast (worm manure) which is an excellent, nutrient rich organic fertiliser and soil conditioner. The waste that these voracious Tiger Worms feed on consists of the pond sludge from the storm water settling pond, untreated shavings and sawdust and other mulched organic waste from around the site. This is a restorative take on waste management, not only is the waste diverted from the landfill but the end result nourishes our environment.
In the field
From retirement villages and student accommodation, to the first home buyer and architecturally designed homes, Metrapanel can be used to provide a durable structure built 30-50% faster than traditional methods.
A variety of projects captured over the last quarter are:
Darren Hennessy, stood his architecturally designed large 330sqm home with Metrapanel in April. We captured this opportunity with a time lapse recording. Click here to watch it
PLB/Builtsmart have proven that you can purchase a house/land package starting from $314K, in a 10 section development in Hartis Ave in Huntly.
Russell Braithwaite from Windermere Developments is a longstanding Platinum Installer. He develops house and land packages, produced in lots of three and five at any one time. Currently working on two subdivisions, Russell has secured all of these projects on his great reputation, which Metrapanel is proud to be associated with. Click here to listen to Russell talk about Metrapanel.
“Complete 200sqm buildings, paint/carpet down in 12 days with 3 or 4 guys”
During April Metrapanel produced 12 more Housing NZ units, throughout various locations in Christchurch.
An ongoing development over five years, privately owned Althorp Village has now been completed! Boasting 138 homes plus a hospital, fully constructed in Metrapanel. Althorp Village is a premier residential village for seniors in Pyes Pa, Tauranga. Click here to listen to Claire Neshart, Project Manager for Althorp Village.
Other retirement villages Metrapanel is working with on an ongoing basis are: Lochlea Lifestyle Resort in Ashburton, McKenzie Village in Geraldine, Beetham Lifestyle Village in Gisborne, and Rangiura Retirement Village in Pateruru.
Click here to listen to Les Brigg, Project Manager for Lochlea Lifestyle Resort.
As well as producing 10 classrooms over the last quarter, Metrapanel is also hugely beneficial for student accommodation. Russell Braithwaite swears by it – “We use Metrapanel for solid core doors, never replaced a door in four years, opposition would replace a door a month, noise between rooms is reduced. Imagine 36 students kicking the crap out of your building, Metrapanel stands up, maintenance is down as it's superficial so usually only a bit of paint.”
Storage sheds are another brilliant use of Metrapanel. With the speed of the build you can get them up quick to start receiving the income stream. Durability is key as it’s not a tin shed so there is no sweating and no moisture.
ICS secured projects with GJ Gardiners Mid and South Canterbury, and Concision! The first full load of 90 sheets went to Ashburton on 5th March! View ICS Company Profile
Windermere Developments is also increasing awareness of the Metra ceiling system in the Bay of Plenty, securing a number of large opportunities, one being in the Copper Cres Life Style Block.

Big Habitat Build
Metrapanel has a long standing relationship with Habitat for Humanity Auckland. The latest project was a 125sqm, five bedroom home built over a three week period in the grounds of Takapuna Grammar School. It was then transported to Palmers Road in Clendon, South Auckland to be finished and was handed over to its new owners on the 5th June 2015. Check out Habitat for Humanity Auckland’s Facebook Page to view more amazing photos of the build.
On2It Family Trust
In January 2015 the trust was established with the aim of “Keeping our Metra family and their homes healthy”. The aim is to support our Metra Family/Team in any way we can to keep our families healthy and safe. We have had our first family project in June, where we replaced and painted rotten weather boards, painted the back porch, installed a heat pump, carpeted a bedroom.
In the industry
Metrapanel is already here and has been for the last 25 years! Having produced over 9,000 homes nationwide, with a strong history boasting only positive experiences and a current network of 13 Licensed Installers and 115 Certified Builders, we have the factory capacity to take on extended growth throughout New Zealand, however we need some key Installers to hand these opportunities over to. To keep up with the rise in demand for our system we are looking to bring on Approved Developers, Licensed Installers and Certified Builders predominately in Auckland and Queenstown. Check out our Come on Board section of our website for more information and to download an Expression of Interest form. Please contact Melissa Savage if you have any queries at all or would like to discuss in further detail.

Collaboration is key
We had an amazing day in March at the Hamilton Gardens hosting our Annual Team Event, with over 40 of our current installers, strategic partners, speakers and potential installers attending the days’ events. With guest speaker presentations on Lean Manufacturing, Code Mark, and most significantly the Resene Story from John Gerondis, it was a captivating day. As well as our own team updates on research and development, health and safety, and marketing, we also had some of our current installers, Builtsmart, ICS, Laing Property and Windermere Developments share their stories and reinforce our key messages of exceptional customer service, relationships, quality and systems.
Next update in September 2015 - Spring issue!
Until then, have a great few months and feel free to give Melissa Savage, Business Manager a call direct on 07 828 2077 or email, to discuss any projects or opportunities you would like to investigate with Metrapanel.
